A new way to welcome in Shabbat! Join us for a catered Shabbat dinner and learn about justice with Rabbi Zedek. Sermon Topic: "Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof" (Justice, Justice, you shall pursue): More than my namesake (Zedek and Tzedek are the same word), the challenge of contributing to a better and more just world is always with us. The annual MLK commemorations are meant to be much more than lip service to that commitment. If we are to fulfill our mission to be "a light to the nations," then there is always work to be done.

We will be screening two short films by local, Emmy-Winning filmmaker Sharon Liese: "Parker" and "The Flagmakers." Each film will be followed by a talkback and Q&A with Sharon and the event will conclude with a light dessert reception in The White Theatre Galleria.

What kind of jewelry would a Jewish bride in Afghanistan wear?
Where can I store an etrog during Sukkot?
This six-week course will answer these questions as we explore the field of Judaica through the extensive Michael Klein Collection. Each week, participants will learn about a different theme represented by Jewish ritual items, artwork, and objects used in the daily lives of Jews around the world that date back centuries. Many objects will be pulled from the collection’s storage, offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of the finest collections of its kind in the country. Registration will include a booklet of reading materials, photographs and Klein Collection publications.

Combating Antisemitism on University Campuses

Immediately following Shabbat services, which begin at 6:00pm, we will have the opportunity to ask Lisa Kranc about Antisemitism on University Campuses Today and what we can do to support our students. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served during the talk, which will conclude around 7:30pm.
Bio:
Lisa Kranc (pronounced Krantz) serves as the chair of the Brandeis University Board of Trustees. A daughter of Holocaust survivors, Lisa grew up on a chicken farm in Plainfield, Connecticut and received her undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in 1975 and an MBA in 1977 from Columbia University. Lisa currently lives in Nashville and Kennebunkport, Maine. Her career spanned over 36 years in the marketing field in corporate America, and she retired as head of Marketing from AutoZone, Inc, a Fortune 500 firm, in 2012. Since her retirement from daily corporate life, she has served on several non-profit boards and currently serves on the board of two museums, in addition to her role at Brandeis. Lisa has ten nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and nephews. Two of her nephews are currently fighting in the war in Gaza.

From the Klein Collection: Ketubah | |
|
Unlike any other marriage contract in the Klein Collection, this Italian example from 1802 has the text of the tenaim (agreements made at the couple’s engagement) alongside the text of the ketubah. It comes from Pisa, which had a Jewish community of around 300 people at the time it was made.
