SUMMARY:Pre-show Happy Hour at White Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Schmooze with other B'nai Jehudah congregants before seeing Tre
e of Life\, a bittersweet\, comic drama about Judaism in a small Iowa town
. The playwright\, Victor Wishna will also be joining us at our pre-show d
essert program to tell us about his inspiration and writing process.\n\nPr
e-show dessert at 6:00pm\, curtains at 7:30pm. RSVP to receive 10% off you
r ticket. Already have tickets? No problem! You can still join us for bite
s and drinks before the show begins.\n\nMAC Room at the White Theatre (580
 1 W 115th Street\, Overland Park)\n\nRSVP for the pre-show program here.\n
\nIn this new play by Victor Wishna\, sixty-something widower Ken clings t
o his proud but fading Jewish congregation in the tiny town of Wiconee\, I
owa\; Colombian grad student Marianela\, visiting to research her disserta
tion\, represents a burgeoning community of Latin Americans who are redisc
overing their Jewish roots. As Mari’s true intentions are revealed\, the
synagogue’s antique Torah scroll—the rolled parchment containing the
handwritten five books of Moses\, referred to in Jewish tradition as an et
z chayim\, “tree of life”—becomes a critical character in the bitter
sweet (and occasionally comic) drama that unfolds.\n\nInterlocking with th
e present narrative of Congregation Etz Chayim’s demise\, the story of t
he synagogue’s origins and its Torah’s mysterious past plays out in th
e same space\, a century before. Inspired by real events\, exploring littl
e-known realities of recent history\, and shifting between continents and
across centuries\, "Tree of Life" provokes us to examine the foundations o
f our own identities. How—through what connections—do we define who we
are? Do we belong to our past\, or does it belong to us? What do we hold
onto\, and when should we let go?
