Why are individuals of Jewish descent at higher risk for genetic-related cancers and diseases? In partnership with Sharsheret and JScreen, an organization affiliated with Emory University that does both Reproductive Carrier Screening and Hereditary Cancer Testing, folks interested in cancer screening or couples in the family-planning stages will learn from a local Genetic Counselor, hear from community members who have benefitted from carrier and cancer screening and learn how to mitigate their risks at this community-wide public health screening event.
This event is being held at The JKC, 5801 W 115th St, Overland Park, KS.
Presented by Congregation Beth Torah, B’nai Jehudah, Congregation Beth Shalom, and Jewish Experiences, a Collaboration of The J and Jewish Federation
Featuring Local Genetic Counselor Ilana Chilton, MS, CGC
Jewish genetic screening plays an important role in supporting the health and continuity of the Jewish community. Many hereditary conditions, including those associated with increased cancer risks (like BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations) and various genetic diseases impacting reproductive health, occur at higher rates within Ashkenazi Jewish populations.
BECOME EMPOWERED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE INFORMED MEDICAL AND REPRODUCTIVE DECISIONS
Genetic specialists and local individuals will share information about testing resources and how cancer and carrier screening can prevent or prepare families to manage certain genetic conditions, improving health outcomes and enhancing family well-being.
THIS EVENT IS FREE AND WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A KOSHER RECEPTION
